One of the themes in The Secret Garden is the relationship between a person's outlook on life (for example, is the glass half full or half empty) and that person's health. This novel shows how they can have an impact on each other. Think of Colin OR Mary when they were first introduced in the novel and compare them to the person they have now become. Answer the following questions about ONE of them. 1. How have they changed their outlook on life and how has that impacted their health? 2. What caused them to change their outlook on life? 3. Thinking of our overall theme of the unit "change" what category of change does your character's fall under? Explain why you chose this change. This is due on Monday, February 6 Mrs. Walters Compare the way Dickon has been raised to how Mary and Colin have been raised. How is it different? Do you think Dickon being a "common moor boy" rather than a member of the "privileged class" is important to how he has turned out as a person?
Your response should include: 1. One comparison to Dickon and Mary 2. One comparison to Dickon and Colin. 3. Your opinion on the importance of Dickon being raised as a "common moor boy" rather than a member of the "privileged class" and how that had an impact on his overall personality. Thank you, Mrs. Walters As you read The Secret Garden find one simile and one metaphor that the author uses to paint a picture in the readers' minds. 1. What were the two things being compared? 2. Why do you think the author chose to compare these two things? 3. What images did this metaphor/simile help create in your mind? 4. What would have been a BORING way of saying the same thing? As always use complete, well thought out sentences. Make sure to include the exact metaphor and simile in your response AND the page number where it can be found!! PROOF READ BEFORE YOU SUBMIT! DUE DATE: Wednesday, January 18th. Mrs. Walters After looking over the Discovery Education Probe, I noticed that most of you missed the question that had to do with metaphors/similes. Therefore, I created a fun way to review the two most common types of figurative language: metaphors and similes.
You will listen to soundbites of 5 songs and read the lyrics to each of these songs. From there, you will identify the metaphors and similes in each verse of each song. Once you have listened to all of them, you will choose ONE metaphor and ONE simile and comment what they were comparing and how they added to the song. Make sure to use COMPLETE sentences and meaty details to support your answers. To get started, click HERE! Please complete this Discovery Education probe by Monday, January 9, 2012
